Kensington is one of the oldest communities in the county, and the historic core around Antique Row on Howard Avenue still has many of its Victorian and early twentieth century houses. Around it are Kensington Heights, Rock Creek Hills, Parkwood, Ken-Gar, and Kensington Estates, mostly mid-century.
Renovating old houses produces a particular kind of debris:
- Plaster and lath instead of drywall. It is dusty, it is dense, and one room of it can weigh as much as three rooms of drywall.
- Old-growth lumber and thick trim, often with many coats of paint.
- Cast iron tubs, radiators, and drain pipe.
- Slate, tile, and real linoleum in kitchens and baths.
